Benjamin Gooch

Ben is a self taught artist who works through the Hackney based organisation Core Arts.

I am interested in creating portraits which explore the strange in the familiar and the familiar in the strange. My recent work challenges conventional ideals of worth and beauty, strength and vulnerability, by paying tribute to those who are often marginalised by society.

By painting people who many would stigmatise as 'dysfunctional outsiders', I aim to reflect on conventional portrait practice, and challenge contemporary ideals of value and beauty. The people I work with often lead hard lives and the history of these lives is etched on their faces. My work pays tribute to survival against the odds, strength and vulnerability; this is what I find beautiful deserving of adulation and respect. I invite you to reconsider the ordinariness and extraordinariness of existence.

I'm always interested in new projects, collaborations, commissions and sales, so if you're interested in finding out more or would like to commission me please get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.
